CMA CGM: A POSSIBLE NEW ALLIANCE

The shipping sector might register a new agreement of “vessel sharing agreement” that would see CMA CGM as a key player, which after the “no” of the Chinese Authorities concerning its entrance in the “P3” Alliance, might create a new alliance with the UASC (United Arab Shipping Company) company and the Chinese CSCL (China Shipping Container Line).

This new alliance would control 21,6% of the traffic Asia-Mediterranean thanks to the new mega container ships of 18.000 TEUs ordered by UASC and CSCL that are suitable for the routes Est-West and for the 28 units of 9.000 TEUs of CMA.

UASC and CSCL look like the perfect partners for CMA CGM because they aren’t taking part in others alliances and they are some of the few companies remaining on the trade market big enough to be suitable for a collaboration with a giant like CMA CGM.

This partnership might be a valid opponent to the other alliances, such as:

-          2M (formed by Maersk and Msc)

-          G6 (formed by Hapag Lloyd, NYK, OOCL, Hynday Merchant Marine, APL and MOL

-          CKYHE (formed by Cosco Container Lines, Kawasaky Kiesen Kaisha, Yang Ming and Hanjin).
