THE NEW CONTAINER TERMINAL: MAASVLAKTE II APM TERMINAL WITH ZERO EMISSION

In the portal area of Maasvlakte II of the Rotterdam port the first zero emission container terminal has been inaugurated. It is also completely automatized and it belong to the Danish company APM.

 

 

The terminal (which uses sustainable power source such as windmill blades that are placed in the very same port of Rotterdam) occupies an area of 86 hectares and a pier of 1 meters equipped with 8 STS cranes (ship to shore) which move the containers with mechanical procedures to service areas thus ensuring a annual handling capability of 2.7 million TEUs.

The main purpose of the terminal is that of decrees the congestion problems of the ports of Northern Range which are due to the huge containers flow that travel on mega vessels.

The project (thanks to an investment of 500 million Euros made by APM Terminal) envisage an ulterior improvement of the terminal for a total area of almost 180 hectares, 2800 meters long piers and a total water depth of 20 meters.
