The Panama Canal, completed in 1914, is used by 14 thousand vessels per year.
The expansion is necessary to make the Canal navigable also to cargo ships carrying up to 12 thousand container, the double of the presently allowed one.
The presently maximum capacity of the Panama Canal is determined by a number of factors among which the most important is the size of the locks: the smaller ones are 33.53m width, 320.04m long and 25.91m deep.
The current operating spaces permit only the transit of Panamax vessels.
The maximum length usable in each and every set of locks measures 304.8m.
The project takes a new route along the Canal with the construction of a new set of locks as follows:
- The construction of two locks, one on the Atlantic shore and one on the Pacific shore, each one of them with three watertight rooms that will include three basins.
- The dig of new access channels to the new locks and the widening of the current ship canal.
It’s an open challenge between the Panama Canal and the Nicaragua Canal, two channels that represent the essence of international trade and transport.
